Best Bars (Nightlife)

Beached Whale
(Nightlife - Bars)
1249 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach  • 239-463-5505
Description: FORT MYERS BEACH. It's downright impossible to miss the turn for this time-tested establishment – after all, how many times have you run across signage that boasts a pink-skinned beachcomber, frothy ale held aloof, sitting atop a purple whale? Such good-natured quirkiness is what has so endeared this bastion of barbecue and seafood to regulars over the years. The place's shtick extends far beyond the tasty fare, great live music and nostalgic décor, though. Rumor has it the Beached Whale is often visited by the spirits of Jim and Mary Galloway (and their dog), who perished in 1955 when a fire destroyed their Mermaid Club. In case you hadn't already guessed: The Beached Whale sits on the space once occupied by the Mermaid Club.

Bert's Bar & Grill
(Nightlife - Bars)
4271 Pine Island Rd NW, Matlacha  33993 • 239-282-3232
Description: MATLACHA. Overlooking Matlacha Pass, Bert's enjoys a view that makes folks visiting Pine Island for the first time green with envy. Of course, the so-called "million dollar" waterside setting is only part of this shack's appeal – after all, the kitchen does serve up tasty eats like peel-n-eat shrimp, farm-raised clams and even fried chicken. What's more, the place also features terrific live music, including everything from blues to good, old fashioned rock-n-roll.

Brick Bar & Skybar
(Nightlife - Bars)
2224 Bay St, Fort Myers  33901 • 239-332-7425
Description: DOWNTOWN. Located above Harold's, Brick Bar is a laid-back yet upscale bar that features a varied repertoire of entertainment over the course of the week: karaoke nights, performances by funk and R&B acts, even the occasional dance party. As for the space, the exposed brick walls that give the place its name are disrupted only by large windows, and the smooth-topped bar in the center of the room is easily accessible to all patrons. Meanwhile, upbeat Skybar, on the rooftop of the same building, features live and DJ-spun music in an attractive outdoor setting that overlooks the river. Expect to find a younger crowd at Skybar.

Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille
(Nightlife - Bars)
975 Rabbit Rd, Sanibel Island  33957 • 239-472-8311
Description: SANIBEL ISLAND. Locals are the first to admit that it's businesses like Doc Ford's that help make Sanibel Island such a special place. Take away the signage, and from the road, the place looks like little more than a beach home with palm trees painted on its exterior. It's inside, though – a scene marked by its crowded bar area, TVs tuned to sports, high-standing bistro tables and old school video games – that Doc Ford's true character comes to the surface. Terrific eats and a cool porch area further explain this playful joint's wide appeal.

Indigo Room
(Nightlife - Bars)
2219 Main St, Fort Myers  33901 • 239-332-0014
Description: DOWNTOWN. One of downtown's hottest nightlife destinations has to be Main Street's Indigo Room, where the casual island mentality meets great live music. The Room hosts a wide range of popular regional and national acts each season, including their own house band, Sugar Action. Best of all is their beer selection, which features an impressive number of domestic and imported labels. Keep in mind; the party here usually doesn't start cranking until around 10:30, so it's best not to get crazy too early.

Ricochet Nightclub
(Nightlife - Bars)
3853-B Cleveland Ave, Fort Myers  33901 • 239-277-5700
Description: PAGE FIELD. Home to the famous Fort Myers tradition called "coin night" (on Tuesdays between 7pm and 10pm, any coin buys you any drink), Ricochet is a spacious, Western-themed nightspot that just so happens to book some truly outstanding live music. Indeed, over the years folks like 38 Special, Gretchen Wilson and Keith Urban have plugged in their amps here and rocked the crowd well into the night. As for a dress code, there's not really one to speak of, but chances are you'll feel most comfortable in your boots.

Snug Harbour Waterfront Restaurant
(Nightlife - Bars)
1131 First St, Fort Myers Beach  33931 • 239-463-8077
Description: FORT MYERS BEACH. Located on First Street, the Snug Harbour Waterfront Restaurant attracts a good mix of locals and "regular tourists" on Sunday nights, when it hosts a live reggae dock party. The bar sits on the docks, and it's quite a spectacle to see all of the boats pull up in the evening, full of revelers ready to enjoy good food and drink. (perhaps an even better spectacle watching them try to leave!) Make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes, because it's impossible to resist the dancing bug here.
