Lauded for its temperate climate and year-round sunshine, Phoenix has an appeal that extends far beyond the weather. Relaxed and sprawling, the fast-growing city is popular with retirees and tourists alike. It, along with the entire Valley of the Sun, celebrates its Southwestern heritage in museums, galleries, shops, and an amazing variety of regional restaurants. The beauty of the desert landscape also provides an irresistible appeal; resorts and golf courses capitalize on the rugged, otherworldly terrain, and attract thousands of visitors each year. Culture isn't lacking either. From the Heard Museum to the Arizona Science Center, art and exploration coexist happily. There's also shopping at Heritage Square, hot-air balloon rides in the desert, and outdoor concerts throughout the year. Plus, the Grand Canyon and the Red Rock Country of Sedona are only a few hours away. The Suns, the Coyotes, and the Rattlers also call this bustling, welcoming city "home."

Geronimo! The fierce Chiricahua Apache, Geronimo, was a war leader who defended the land of his ancestors against Mexico and the U.S. Born in 1829 in southeastern Arizona, Geronimo spent much of his life there until he and hundreds of other Apaches were transported to military outposts in Florida. Eventually he ended up at Fort Sill in the Oklahoma territory. Before his death in 1909, Geronimo expressed his desire to return to Arizona. Today, however, he is buried in the Apache cemetery in Fort Sill.
